    Biography

    I am a clinician who focuses on pulmonary procedures, including the advanced bronchoscopic techniques of endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (EMN). In general, these are less invasive techniques frequently utilized to diagnose lung nodules, lung masses, mediastinal and hilar enlargement of lymph nodes and lung infections.

    In addition I have advanced training in the interventional pulmonary techniques utilized to diagnose and treat malignant and benign processes in the trachea and bronchi. These techniques include rigid bronchoscopy, bronchial and tracheal stent placement, as well as cryoablative techniques including cryospray and cryoprobe ablation. I am also a co-investigator on several industry sponsored trials of lung volume reduction of emphysema through endobronchial coil or valve placement.

    Procedures Performed:
    * endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
    * electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (EMN)
    * gold fiducial placement
    * rigid bronchoscopy
    * cryospray ablation
    * Argon Plasma Coagulation
    * foreign body removal from the airway
    * balloon dilation of the airway (balloon bronchoplasty)
    * endobronchial stent placement
    * Endobronchial valve placement for bronchopleural fistulae

    Disease Treated
    * lung nodule/mass diagnostics
    * hilar and mediastinal lymph node biopsies
    * carcinoid tumors
    * Lung Cancer
    * tracheobronchomalacia
    * relapsing polychondritis
    * Wegner's Granulomatosis

    In order to schedule an appointment to see me in the Interventional Pulmonary clinic at UCSF please call the number above (415-353-7285). During all clinical consultations, it is essential that you bring a disk with a copy of all outside chest CTs or PET scans.

    In addition to specializing in pulmonary procedures, I am also an attending in the UCSF medical and surgical intensive care units where I manage critically ill patients with respiratory failure and septic shock. I have done research on sepsis and the acute respiratory distress syndrome and am the course director for the critical care ultrasound course at UCSF.

    Research Narrative

    My research lies at the intersection of the nervous system and immunity. Specifically, I have been studying how noradrenergic neurons influence the immune response during severe infection in mice. These studies may have important implications for how states of heightened stress, that lead to elevations in systemic catecholamines, alter the immune system. A second area of research is the epigenetic imprint of severe sepsis on human monocytes.
